What Researchers Know
The cannabis plant contains many different molecular structures, including cannabidiol, also known as CBD, as well as numerous phytocannabinoids, terpenoids and flavonoids. Humans, along with other mammals, have specific cannabinoid receptor sites. These receptor sites are located primarily in the brain, central nervous system, peripheral organs, and especially among immune cells. Collectively, they make up what’s called the Endocannabinoid System, or “ECS”. CBD serves to enhance the cannabinoid receptor site’s communication signal within the endocannabinoid system, thereby enabling our bodies to better identify, trigger, and regulate their own wellness balance. In fact, numerous studies show that many cannabinoids have anti-inflammatory effects, and can help ease pain, reduce tumors, seizures and muscle spasms, improve skin conditions, stimulate appetite, quell aggression, calm anxiety, improve neurological disorders, and even kill or slow the development of cancer cells!
CBD has also proved beneficial with both chronic and acute disease. Among chronic conditions, it can help with arthritis, compromised immune systems, stress responses, aggression and digestive issues. There are also studies under way into CBD’s effects on Type 1 diabetes, organ diseases and cancer. Veterinarians are also discovering CBD can be useful in treating acute ailments like sprains and strains, torn ligaments, bone breaks and even during post-operative care to reduce swelling, pain and stiffness. If your dog is taking conventional drugs for any of these conditions, CBD may enable lower doses of the drugs to attain the desired therapeutic effects. This is a significant benefit of CBD, as conventional medicines often have unwanted side effects.
How soon should I expect results?
As with any herbal treatment, for most ailments you may not see an immediate effect. Patience is important. Your dog may feel some pain relief in a few hours but other symptoms like inflammation may take a few days to show improvement.
